Eighth Month of Pregnancy Diet

Diet is an important aspect to consider for the health of the mother and the baby at all stages of pregnancy. When planning a diet, proper care has to be taken to ensure that the food has good effects on the baby. Foods to eat during pregnancy

1. Iron-rich food

When we talk about iron-rich food, fish is one food item that definitely has to be considered. Iron is very essential during the last trimester. Deficiency in iron can result in anaemia. Besides iron, fish also provides other essential nutrients like protein which is also needed during this stage of pregnancy.

2. Milk and dairy products

Milk and milk products are an essential source of minerals, vitamins, calcium, protein and potassium. Having them as part of your diet during the 8 month pregnancy can have great effects on the growth of the baby.

3. Vitamin C

One of the best sources of vitamin C is orange. Vitamin C is crucial as it helps to soak up the iron intake in the body. Some good sources of vitamin C are oranges, lemons, tomatoes and cabbages.

4. Vital fatty acids

Vital fatty acids are essential for the diet of a pregnant mother at this stage. Omega-3 is a great example of vital fatty acid. Other examples include sources like eggs and peanut butter.

5. Bananas

Bananas are one of the best fruits for pregnant women. They are a great source of essential vitamins and minerals. They are rich in calcium, potassium and iron. They are also great for relieving constipation and helping with digestion. In short, they are a must-have food for an expecting mother.

6. Leafy vegetables

Leafy vegetables are rich in fiber. They contain fiber and other minerals like potassium, iron and calcium. Continue having them at this stage of the pregnancy and you will see the benefits soon.

Foods to avoid during pregnancy

1. Alcohol and tobacco:

Consumption of alcohol or tobacco is seriously harmful to you and your baby. They can cause serious harm to the baby and the baby could be born with major health complications.

2. Pate:

This is a food that you must avoid at all trimesters. Pate can contain listeria which causes listeriosis. It can cause miscarriage or stillbirth. Make sure that you avoid them in your eighth month of pregnancy diet.

3. Undercooked eggs:

Avoid consuming undercooked or raw eggs during pregnancy. They can contain a bacteria called salmonella which causes food poisoning.

4. Raw fish:

Avoid including raw fish in your diet during pregnancy. Raw fish dishes like sushi may be a temptation but keep in mind that these foods can also cause food poisoning which is something you want to avoid during pregnancy.

A well balanced diet with lots of fruits and veggies and lean proteins are still good for you and your growing baby, foods to avoid is fish high in mercury, too much caffeine, alcohol, you should heat up lunch meats, undercooked/ raw meats, and unpasteurized foods. During the first trimester you do not need any extra calories, during your second and third you need to eat an extra 300 calories a day. When I was pregnant with my second child I was determined to avoid getting preeclampsia again and followed the brewers diet for pregnant women. My first was 9lbs 7ozs 6 days early and my second was 6lbs 8ozs two days past the due date.
